Have you ever been curious about what happens to recycled plastic? You’re not alone.

In just the United States, millions of tons of plastic waste are disposed of every year. Just recently 8.2 million tons of clothing and footwear, 3.4 million tons of diapers, 840,000 tons of plastic cups and plates, and 910,000 tons of sheets, towels, and pillowcases ended up in landfills.

We’ve compiled a list of the 5 biggest myths about recycling in the hope the it will help in reducing the amount of plastic waste each year.

You may be surprised to find out that recycling is not as much of a chore as you may have previously though. Help to keep our planet green can be much more rewarding and accessible.

First Recycling Myth

One of the most popular recycling myths is that recycling uses more energy than it saves.

However, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recycling just one ton of aluminum cans can conserve the same amount of energy as consuming over 20 barrels of oil.

In order to save energy in a way that’s completely eco-friendly, challenge yourself to recycle and encourage others to do the same.

Second Recycling Myth

Maybe you’ve heard others saying that recyclables need to be washed before they’re in good enough shape to be put in the recycling bin.

The truth is, recyclables only need to be emptied and do not have to be in “good shape.” You also don’t need to remove and wrappings.

Third Recycling Myth

Recycling myth number three is that if you put the cap back on a bottle, it isn’t recyclable. Really, plastic recyclers try to recycle everything they can, so you can leave the lid on plastic bottles when recycling.

Fourth Recycling Myth

Recycling myth number 4 is a common myth, that everything can only be recycled once, so the plastic will end up in a landfill eventually.

Actually, most everyday items can be recycled multiple times, and by doing so we help save a substantial amount of energy.

Materials such as metals, glass and aluminum, can be recycled indefinitely without lowering the quality of the product.

Fifth Recycling Myth

Recycling myth number five is that products containing more than one type of material aren’t recyclable.

While this was actually true at one point in time, today’s recycling technology is now much more advanced, allowing recycling providers the ability to accept more items.
